Puerto Natales (PNT), Chile
Email this trip
Day 1 - Private transfer Natales – Torres Del Paine – Hike to Pehoe Lake
Early morning we will start from Puerto Natales, taking a private transfer along an unpaved road heading to Torres del Paine National Park and the administration area. From here we start a 6 hours hike to the shore of the Pehoe along Las Carretas trail. On the way we follow the Grey River and have a picnic lunch in this pristine area.
(2 hours by private transfer, 5 hours hike) (BL-D) (Night at Mountain Hut (hot shower available)).

Day 2 - Round trip hike to Glacier Grey
We will begin early morning with our hike to the Grey Glacier. Initially ascending 200mts up a winding narrow path leading us to Laguna Negra, a place where we will observe the first glimpses of the South Patagonia Ice Field with its many unclimbed mountains. We will advance through forests and rivers, with possible sightings of spectacle and flying steamer ducks, up to the glacier viewpoint. We will have lunch at this place to see, if we are lucky enough, ice calving from the huge glacier wall. We will then return, following the same path, with views of Cordon Olguín and Paine Grande, to reach the Shore of Pehoe Lake to spend our second overnight.
(8 hours hike, 22KM) (B-BL-D) (Night at Mountain Hut (hot shower available)).

Day 3 - Round trip hike to the French Valley
We will start our day with a 2-hour walk going around the southwest side of Paine Grande, the highest peak in the Park, through native forests of Chilean fire bush and evergreen beech (Nothofagus Bethuloides), up to the hanging bridge over the French River for our first glimpses of the hanging glacier. Then we will ascend (300 M) for one hour through a surreal Japanese garden landscape, crossing beech forests, to reach the French valley viewpoint gifting us with a magnificent view of both mountains and lakes. We will lunch here with good possibilities of seeing avalanches from the hanging glacier or simply observe the west side of the Cuernos (2600 M), Espada (2400 M) and Fortaleza (2800 M). Our way back will be the same until we reach the Refugio at the shore of the Pehoe Lake to spend our last night here.
(7-8 hours hike) (B-BL-D) (Night at Mountain Hut (hot shower available)).

Day 4 - Hike back Las Carretas trail – Transfer to Rio Serrano Area
Early in the morning, we start our hike to back Las Carretas Trail. From the administration area we take our transfer to Rio Serrano, where we will stay in a cozy mountain hut.
(5-6 hours hike, 1 hour by transfer) (B-BL-D) (Night at Mountain Hut (hot shower available)).

Day 5 - Round trip hike to Las Torres lookout point – Transfer back to Natales
In the morning, we take a transfer to Las Torres area. From here we start our walk through incredible tall-deciduous beech forests, with views of glaciers and waterfalls to continue ascending through a huge terminal moraine up to a viewpoint (900M) with excellent picture taking opportunities. We will enjoy lunch in front of this breathtaking scenery. We will descend, following the same path down to the estancia Las Torres, located at the mountain's plateau where we will take a transfer back to Puerto Natales.
(1 hour by transfer, 8-10 hours hike, 18 Kms., 2 hours by private transfer) (B-BL)

The schedules indicated above are subject to change due to weather conditions or unexpected circumstances beyond our control, but we will try our best to keep them unaltered

Weather Conditions:
Chilean Patagonia is famous for its unpredictable weather. Because of the possibility of experiencing all four seasons in one day, it is important to be prepared for anything. In winter the temperature is typically between -10ºC and 10ºC, but this is a dry cold. There is also a high probability of stable weather between May and October.

Mountain Lodge (Refugio) Paine Grande

All mountain lodges used by us for our trips are located in strategic places in the park and with fantastic views. There are 6 beds to each room (bunk-bed style) and have shared bathrooms with hot water.

Paine Grande is a large and modern refugio set on the banks of the Lake Pehoe, including internet connection and full service bar. It’s the jump off point for the catamaran crossing Lake Pehoe and the walks to the French and Grey Valleys part of the "W" and "Circuit" hikes.

The weather in Patagonia in an important factor that must b e taken into account. The maximum temperature in summer is 20 C° and it drops to below 0° in winter. The windchill factor sometimes makes the ambient temperature drop 6 or 7 degrees. The temperature of the water is normally between 4 and 5 degrees Celsius.

(WWNAT) Winter Trek. It was fun!
It was an awesome experience. Guide Armando was pleasant and knowledgeable and I learned a lot about the area. There was no question that we asked that he did not know the answer to. He cooked delicious meals. He was respectful.

Your company answered emails promptly and when we arrived at your office, staff were pleasant and informative. Very professional. The planning and trek ran smoothly. There were no hitches. Meals, company , conversation and knowledge of Armando were excellent. It was fun!

(WWNAT) Winter W Trek in August
Chile Nativo was top notch: highly organised and very professional. Everyone we dealt with was absolutely first rate. Also we had to change our dates by one day because of a strike in Argentina that cancelled our flight to El Calafate. They rearranged everything for us and figured out bus schedules etc (non-trivial because there was not a direct bus from Calafate to Natales on the day that we needed one under the new schedule)

The 5 day Winter W Trek itinerary was perfect. We wanted good long hikes and beautiful Patagonian scenery, and that is exactly what we got. Our Guides were fantastic. While in retrospect could have easily done the W trek unguided I found a lot of value in having Mauricio as a guide. 1) He was very knowledgeable about the area. 2) He knew how to time our hikes so that we were sure to get to our destinations (and got us all the way to the British Lookout in French Valley–substantially further than the plan in the itinerary). 3) Choosing hikes based on the weather to maximize views, etc. 4) Excellent knowledge of flora and fauna. 5) Great sense of humor. 6) Not having to cook was quite a luxury.

(WWNAT) The winter experience
Although we were initially in a bit of sticker-shock from general Patagonia organized trek costs, we were very happy with the value that our Chile Nativo trek ended up having. Everything from the itinerary to the food to the transportation was well-organized and comfortable, and we were able to have a nice balance of a rugged trekking experience with certain little luxuries that made the trip more relaxing and enjoyable. One of the nice things about the itinerary during our trek was its flexibility- obviously a lot of what we did depended on the weather and other external factors, but our guide made sure to check in with us about what we wanted to do and what we were feeling up to as the trek continued.

Our guide, Mauricio, was amazing. Not only was he very knowledgable, experienced and attentive as a guide, but he was also just lots of fun to hang out with and easy to spend 5 days with. Because our trek was only 3 people including the guide, we were curious how that dynamic would go...but it was always comfortable, fun and easy-going. Mauricio also did a great job of showing us the sights, critters, and unseen spots in the winter, and he always challenged us to go a bit further. It was always worth it!

Booking our trek with Chile Nativo was easy, worth the price, and helpful to first time Patagonia visitors. Being able to trek Patagonia in the winter with Chile Nativo was a big plus as well, and it led to a lot of unique and amazing experiences. Our very first day of full trekking was a clear, cold, and sunny day, and we decided to head up the French Valley. Thanks to Mauricio's knowledge and experience, we were able to put in a full day of hiking and make it all the way up to the Britanico viewpoint. The snow seemed pretty untouched and it seemed like we were the only ones who had made it up there this winter, and without any other people around, it was very surreal and beautiful. An exhausting but amazing day that was very, very worth the hard work!

(WWNAT) Torres del Paine Winter W-Trek
The Torres del Paine Winter W-trek was a unique way to experience the National Park and its unique landscapes. The treks were exciting and a bit challenging at times, but it was definitely worth it for the views you get at the end! The meals at the rifugios were excellent and a great way to experience local Chilean cuisine.

The guides were excellent - professional and very knowledgeable. They were friendly and everyone got on well.

It would have been useful to have a rough itinerary of the trip by email before - e.g. a map of the trail and where we would be going each day. I did not know until we got there that we would be staying at the same rifugio for 3 nights and doing day hikes - if I knew this I may have bought a day bag with me instead of having to empty and carry my big pack.

My Chile Nativo experience was amazing - thank you! Professional, knowledgable and safe - but most importantly enabled me to experience the true beauty of Torres del Paine and its wildlife in Winter.

(WWNAT) Torres del Paine in MayTrek
Our Patagonia trip was perfect. The weather was amazing, save a foggy day by Glacier Grey and some blustery wind on our day to visit the king penguins in Tierra del Fuego. Both of our guides were terrific!

Chile Nativo and their guides/drivers did a tremendous job. Gonzalo was very prompt in responding to e-mails and was helpful. Both Ricardo and Armando were extremely knowledgable guides. The itinerary they crafted was perfect for our needs and balanced sightseeing with hiking in the park.

The majority of the group got up-close and personal with a puma on the last day hike. I would say that is something that everyone will remember. Again thank you to everyone for helping us provide this amazing trip for our students.

The box lunches hit the spot especially the "granola" bars on the first day. Dinners were of good quality and ample. While adequate warmth could always be found under the covers/in bed, some trek lodges we a tad cold. Letting folks know that might be beneficial. The itinerary was what it needed to be and the support crew were great.

One thing in particular is worth mentioning. When issues arose with trekkers, e.g., inability to keep up with the main group, muscle pulls, aches and pains, etc., the guides seamlessly and very expertly handled the issues with glee and pleasure never making anything a "big" issues; they almost made it seem as another fun thing to do. Perhaps it was personality or professionalism, but they were masterful accommodating everyone without unduly impacting (in spirit or labor) the other party members. Bravo!!

Your folks were good at working with us, via lots of emails, on getting the dates and itinerary worked out.

It was a wonderful and amazing experience with a great group of people - trekkers and guides. The late winter timing meant we virtually had the trials and sites to ourselves.

Aside: We had weather issues flying in, and Chile Nativo helped us by arranging a van to taxi us from the airport to Puerto Natales. It took a bit to get this all worked out. Perhaps you could explore and have on hand contingency plans, like the one you worked out for us, just in other folks encounter the same or similar problems like we did. Your help saved our trip. Making it easier for folks to deal with such "near disasters" would gain you even more appreciation and praise! Cheers -

(WWNAT) Patagonia Experience
Thank you so much for assisting us with our Patagonia experience and for accommodating my slow pace. Apparently, I needed to do a little more research about the trek and perhaps a lot more training! Next time…..

Chuma and Fernando were awesome guides and we feel fortunate that they were part of our group. I’m so glad you were on the trek as well; your knowledge about the park and your enthusiasm are quite impressive.

(WWNAT) I had so much fun!!!
Our guides, They were so much fun!!

I had a wonderful trip with great guides and a great group of people. Everyone was so helpful in Chile Nativo and they're always happy! There was lots of great energy.

(WWNAT) We had so much fun
We had so much fun! Everything was organized and provided for us so all we had to focus on was hiking in pristine beauty.

Armando knew so much about such vastly different topics - geology, history, and everything in between. He was a great leader and always honest with us. Can't imagine the trip with anyone else.

Without Chile Nativo we never could have experienced the intense beauty of Torres Del Paine - thank you!
